Why boats come ashore at dawn

Most near-shore fishing in this area happens at night, since that's when many species of fish and squid rise to the surface to feed. Boats head out in the evening, cast nets or use lights to attract fish through the night, then return as the sky brightens. The best-value way to eat here: buy seafood on the beach and have a nearby eatery cook it. But a few things to confirm first to avoid surprises:
- How the preparation fee is calculated — per dish, per kilo, or per piece
- Whether there's an extra table, seasoning, or dipping-sauce fee
- How it'll be cooked — grilled, steamed, stir-fried — and how long it takes
- Whether you can bring your own drinks or need to buy from the stall
- Handing over your seafood before asking the price
- Leaving seafood in the sun while waiting
- Ordering too many dishes at once — food goes cold before you finish
- Forgetting to ask if they open early, since many eateries open later than the boats return
Common catches along this coast include mackerel, flathead, and hairtail fish, plus squid and shrimp. This is a place where people work
This part matters more than any buying tip above.
A fishing village isn't a performance. The people you see weighing fish at 5am just finished a night's work at sea, and they have only a few hours to sell everything before the sun gets high. Visitors present during that window can either help — or get in the way.
Ask before taking a close-up photo of someone's face. A wide shot is fine, but pointing a lens at someone's face while they're working is different.
Don't block the path. The route from the water's edge to the weighing area is the busiest spot — standing there for photos directly gets in the way of the work.
Don't litter, and bring your own bag if you're buying.
If invited to help pull a net, do it properly — follow instructions, don't turn it into a photo op.
As for going out on a boat: it can sometimes be arranged, but it depends on weather, space on board, and the boat owner's willingness — it's not a set service. If you'd like to try, ask the day before and be ready to hear no.
