The same coastline, three completely different moods — the wrong beach means a different trip entirely
The 20-plus kilometers of coast from Tien Thanh down to Ke Ga are far from uniform. One stretch is a fishing village with round basket boats and a dawn fish market. Another is a lively beach park, Miami-style. And another is nothing but granite rock, pine forest, and a lighthouse that's stood there since 1899.
Three moods, pick by feeling
The natural Tien Thanh beach
Gently sloping white sand, round basket boats resting on shore, nets drying along the path. A fish market sets up right on the sand at dawn. This stretch has kept its original rhythm of life — a place to listen to the sea, not to play.
Bikini Beach — a 16-hectare beach park
Located inside the NovaWorld resort. Watersports by day, beach clubs by night, plenty of eateries and full shower facilities. This is the only stretch with services right at hand.
Thuan Quy – Ke Ga
Granite rock formations, a pine forest along the shore, and Vietnam's oldest lighthouse. Most beautiful at dawn. But there's almost no services — bring everything you need.
A full day along this coast, if you want to see it all
The three stretches sit close enough to cover in one day. But order matters — do it backwards and you'll miss the best parts of each.
Head to Ke Ga for sunrise
The sun rises behind the lighthouse, and this is the only time of day the sea here stays calm. Arrive later and the sun turns harsh, the rocks heat up, and you won't be able to stay long.
Backtrack to the fishing village for breakfast and the fish market
Boats come ashore around this time. The market sets up right on the sand and wraps up fast — arrive after 9am and there's only drying nets left. Also the cheapest time of day to buy seafood.
Rest and avoid the sun
From about 11am to 2pm, the sun here is intense and the beach has little natural shade. This is the time to be indoors or in the pool, not out on the beach.
Bikini Beach: swim and try watersports
The sun has softened, the water is warm, and this is the stretch with shower facilities, so you won't head home covered in sand. Kids can play the longest during this window.
Stay right where you are
The beach clubs and eateries are right there. No need to travel again after an afternoon in the water.
The golden hour for this whole coast is dawn. The sea is calmest, the light is best, and at Ke Ga it's the only window before the rocks heat up. If you only have one window, choose the morning, not the afternoon.
Quick picks by type of trip
| Traveling with | Best pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Young kids | Bikini Beach | Showers, food, and lifeguards. These three things decide how an outing with kids goes. |
| Older parents | The natural Tien Thanh beach | A gentle slope, calm waves, quiet. Go early and bring water. |
| A couple | Ke Ga at sunrise | Quiet, beautiful, and the photos here look nothing like a typical beach shot. |
| A group of friends | Bikini Beach | Watersports by day, beach clubs at night, no need to travel far. |
| Cheap fresh seafood | The fishing village, before 9am | The morning fish market wraps up fast. |
A few things worth knowing before you go in
- June through August sees seaweed wash ashore. Swimming isn't ideal during this window. But the pool and water park are unaffected — just shift your focus, not your dates.
- The Ke Ga stretch is rocky. Wear strap-on sandals, not flip-flops. Moss-covered rocks at the waterline are very slippery.
- The natural beach has no lifeguards. Waves are usually calm but rip currents still exist. With young kids, choose a beach with lifeguards on duty instead.
- Bring water if you're visiting the two outer stretches. Only Bikini Beach has eateries right at hand.
Which beach is safe for swimming with young kids?
Bikini Beach is the safest choice — lifeguards, showers, and food right there. The natural Tien Thanh beach has calm waves but no lifeguards on duty.
What's the best month for the sea here?
February through April: calm sea, clear water, light wind. June through August sees seaweed wash ashore, making swimming less ideal.
Can I visit all three stretches in one day?
Yes, but follow the right order: Ke Ga at sunrise, the fishing village in the morning, Bikini Beach in the afternoon. Do it backwards and you'll miss both the sunrise and the fish market.
Do I need my own vehicle?
Yes, if you want to visit all three stretches. Not if you're only going to Bikini Beach — it's inside the resort and reachable by the internal shuttle.
