Along Nguyen Dinh Chieu street, connecting central Phan Thiet to Mui Ne, Ong Dia Rock Beach has long been a favorite photo stop for visitors. Beyond its soft white sand and clear water, it's known for a distinctive stone breakwater and round basket boats anchored close to shore.
The Story Behind the Name "Ong Dia Rock Beach"
Many visitors are curious about this quirky name. According to locals, this area once had a natural rock formation shaped exactly like Ong Dia — a folk deity known as the Earth God, usually depicted as a cheerful, kind-faced figure — sitting and gazing toward land. Though the rock has since worn away with time and waves, the name "Ong Dia Rock Beach" has stuck, carrying with it the fishing village's belief in peace and good fortune.
3 Standout Photo Spots at Ong Dia Rock Beach
- The breakwater stretching out to sea: The best photo backdrop here. Concrete breakwater blocks stack out into the water in a long line. Standing here, you can catch the sea breeze and a stunning sunset in one shot.
- The cool, shady casuarina trees: A row of rustling casuarina (pine-like) trees lines the beach. Wear a flowing maxi dress and walk beneath them for photos with a youthful, breezy feel.
- A village of basket boats on the sand: Early in the morning or late afternoon, fishermen's red and blue round basket boats scatter across the sand, forming a vivid, colorful working scene.
Swimming & Local Snacks
The water here is fairly calm with a gently sloping sand floor, a good fit for families with young kids to swim. After some time in the water, don't skip these local treats:
- Ba Nhat coconut & coconut ice cream: Along the breakwater, plenty of vendors sell fresh coconuts. Sellers crack them open in three skilled machete strikes (hence the name "ba nhat" — three strikes). There's also sweet, chilled coconut ice cream, a perfect way to cool off in summer.
- Hammock coffee: Rent a shaded hammock by the beach (around 30,000–50,000 VND, drink included), listen to the waves, and sip a classic Vietnamese iced milk coffee.
